Welcome to my blog. For my first post I thought I would talk about "Web 2.0".
Many of you are probably wondering what web 2.0 is and if you aren't, then you probably should be. There is no true clear definition of this concept. No one can say where 1.0 stops and 2.0 begins, but I'm going to anyway.
Web Master Man's definition for Web 2.0: "Websites openly displaying viewer communications with only reasonable limitations."
This idea has been made famous by websites like Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and Wikipedia. These sites allow you to say anything you want through text, images, video, etc. The limitations these sites place on communication are only there to improve service and do not hinder the ability of its users to voice their opinions. For Facebook, Myspace, and YouTube the restrictions are mostly spam and pornography censoring. In certain instances these website actually put the power of limitations into the hands of its users. Wikipedia is entirely dependent on this idea. This is their way of keeping the information factual and therefore useful to those who read it. So please make my blog 2.0 compliant and leave some comments.
Thanks for reading my first post!

Well I'm not sure thats the definition of Web 2.0, but it is definitely describes how I want more sites to be.
ReplyDeleteI dont agree that youtube falls into that category though, theyve had some issues with censoring comments, so I hear.
So any sort of BBS system from the late 70's onward would be considered Web 2.0? I think that USER contribution is an important part of what is generally considered to be Web 2.0, but certainly can't define it entirely.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I think the idea of using Web 2.0 as any sort of moniker is a little bit trite at this point. I feel like the whole idea of Web 2.0 started to dissolve when it was used to describe 'trendy' design patterns.
I guess that was really part of my point. Web 2.0 is a bit of a joke. That's why I can just make up a definition.
ReplyDeleteWhat I was trying to explain is what I think is the most important element that puts website up to modern day standards. Although BBS systems are probably the best example of user input, that is their entire purpose. What I was talking about is a similar kind of input combined with another purpose.
Could you imagine YouTube if they approved all the videos, comments, and ratings? Or think about the comment you posted here. It is a somewhat negative comment about my blog post, but I approve all comments that aren't spam.
Of course there are many other important factors in web development/design, but in my opinion user input is the most important thing a website can implement that many do not.
Web 2.0....heh...the absurdity of versioning the Internet which is an ever-changing monolith. I digress. IMHO, Web 2.0 marks the era to which websites finally pushed the traditional limitations of the browser to make online applications interact with users in a way that is instantaneous, rich, and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBtw, you should change your default caption and about page :-)
ReplyDeleteHmm the about page must have been changed when I changed the template or something... but I just figured out how to change the caption. haha
ReplyDeleteThis is how you change the tagline:
